With an assortment of fish oils (containing DHA) and algae-derived DHA products on the market, informed consumers recognize these important fatty acids as valuable supplements. Why make another brand? The reason is in the product: Dr. Fuhrman's DHA Purity is unique. This vegetable-derived formula was developed to maximize purity and freshness and is entirely vegan.

DHA from fish is well established by science to have important health benefits. Fish, however, is an unfavorable source because most fatty fish contain potentially harmful pollutants, such as dioxin and mercury. People also report difficulty digesting these beneficial oils because of the fishy taste and foul odor. The bad taste, indigestion, or burping from these oils don't feel healthy.

Dr. Fuhrman explains:
Moving to a vegetable-derived DHA, rather than a fish derived product, was the first step to address this issue. In our research, we conducted independent laboratory tests on the fish oils in current products to test for stability and rancidity and found them lacking in freshness. The algae oil DHA products scored better, but still it did not reach the high standards that Dr. Fuhrman desired. To assure optimal health, he wanted to offer a product for his patients, friends and family that would meet exceptionally high standards for freshness and purity.

After extensive research, we found a solution. We buy the highest quality most concentrated form of DHA, package them in dark glass (not plastic) and then keep the bottles refrigerated to maintain freshness. You can stop holding your nose trying to swallow fishy oil, and put an end to the burping up that vile aftertaste. You simply can’t get a better tasting, fresher DHA anywhere!

Dr. Fuhrman’s DHA Purity is a natural vegetarian source of DHA an extremely high caliber micro algae and is produced under strict manufacturing conditions to assure purity. The dark glass (not plastic) and refrigeration ensures the freshness of the product. The bottle comes with a graduated dropper for your convenience.

DHA and your brain:
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid and one of the crucial building blocks of human brain tissue. Early in life, DHA is supplied via the placenta and from breast milk. Adequate DHA is particularly important for pregnant and nursing women. Studies have shown improved intelligence scores of breast fed children whose mothers took DHA supplements during pregnancy and nursing.1 The DHA levels in the breast milk from women in the United States are among the lowest in the world. DHA deficiencies starting in childhood can contribute to multiple problems later in life, such as hyperactivity and allergies. In fact, dyslexia and ADHD have been linked to the low DHA intake common in the United States.2 An adequate level of DHA has been found to improve behavior and symptoms of ADHD.3,4

Deficiencies of DHA may increase vulnerability to depression and may be responsible for most post partum depression after the baby's needs extract DHA from the mother's stores. DHA supplementation is indicated in anyone with a history of depression.

Alzheimer's sufferers have also been found to have lower DHA levels than healthy adults of the same age. Maintaining adequate DHA stores throughout life, as well as eating a diet rich in natural plant foods, is necessary for preventing the late life occurrence of these mental deficits associated with aging.

DHA and heart disease
Algae derived DHA was found in recent studies to increase the HDL/LDL ratio and decrease the total cholesterol/HDL ratio as well as lower triglycerides.5 DHA also increases the elasticity of the blood vessels and reduces total vascular resistance resulting in a lower pulse pressure that has significant effects at lessening the occurrence of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes.6 It also has an anti-arrhythmic effect reducing the overall rate of fatal heart attacks.7

DHA in vegetarians
The typical modern diet is low in DHA for both omnivores and vegetarians alike. Most people eat a diet rich in Omega-6 fats, but deficient in Omega-3. Vegetarian and those who limit their intake of fish, wild meat, and eggs have especially been noted to have low levels of DHA. Many vegetarians who consume sufficient flax, hemp, walnuts and greens as a source of short chain Omega-3 fat may manufacture sufficient DHA fat on their own, but even with an ideal diet, lots of those on vegan diets are still found to be too low in this extremely beneficial compound.8

Dr. Fuhrman has often tested these levels in his patients and observed how frequently deficiencies of these fatty acids exist. Lower levels of DHA are the reason populations eating some fish are found to have improved cardiac blood parameters when compared to vegetarians, and it is the most common reason why some vegetarians may develop dry skin or other signs of imperfect health.9

Storage and Shipping
In addition, Dr. Fuhrman has tested all the other DHA products on the market and found them to be shockingly high in rancidity scores, causing burping, indigestion and a foul taste. Consuming rotten oil is not healthful! Compared to other brands, Dr. Fuhrman’s DHA Purity is kept refrigerated at all times, so that the oil does not become rancid or oxidized. It is packaged in dark glass bottles, shipped in refrigerated trucks and stored under refrigeration until it is shipped. It may take months for DHA to deteriorate and become rancid, outside of a refrigerator, but it is important to purchase a product that begins fresh and without oxidation. You will certainly taste the freshness DHA Purity when it hits your tongue. Nobody should be using capsules, which hide the taste of rotten oil!

Supplement Facts
NewHarvest™ EPA
NewHarvest™ Vegetarian EPA is a new yeast-derived source of the key omega-3 fatty acid, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Much like DHA, it also can be found in fish oil, but this 100% vegetarian EPA is without the fish. NewHarvest™ Vegetarian EPA is naturally free of environmental contaminants, PCBs, mercury, and lead. EPA has an anti-inflammatory effect when taken in higher doses, and it may be recommended as part of a treatment plan for inflammatory diseases such as asthma, skin disorders, arthritis, or autoimmune conditions. EPA may be recommended by your doctor to prevent or treat dementia as well as psychiatric diseases such as depression. EPA also helps promote cardiovascular health. NewHarvest™ Vegetarian EPA may be recommended as a supplement to take in addition to DHA Purity depending on your medical condition(s).

Consult your doctor before using NewHarvest™ EPA
Keep out of reach of children.
Dosing: Take 1 to 3 capsules daily or as directed by your doctor

Supplement Facts
Resveratin
Resveratin™ is a bioflavonoid complex containing three synergistic antioxidants: pterostilbene (methylated resveratrol), resveratrol, and quercetin. These three compounds are being studied extensively in the areas of cardiovascular health, cell replication, capillary integrity and anti-aging. Resveratrol is a natural plant product that is found in grapes, various berries, plums, peanuts, and pines. All three ingredients are antioxidants that have been shown to work synergistically to protect cellular health. Resveratin™ may be used as part of a treatment plan for a variety of conditions including neurological diseases such as dementia, inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. It is controversial whether these supplemental ingredients could have anti-aging effects in humans as they do in animal models.

Consult your doctor before using Resveratin™, especially if you have a medical condition, are taking medications, or are pregnant or lactating.
Keep out of reach of children.
Dosing: Take 1 capsule twice daily or as directed by your doctor.

Supplement Facts
Omega-Pure 780
Omega-Pure 780™ is an ultra-pure, concentrated fish oil sourced from the arctic waters of Norway. To assure maximum freshness, the oil is molecularly distilled and is stabilized with vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols). It is also independently verified to be free of PCB’s, heavy metals, and pesticides. It is used when higher levels of supplementation are required than could be met with an algae-based product. EPA and DHA are two important ingredients in fish oil that promote cardiovascular health by supporting optimal triglyceride and cholesterol levels and by reducing platelet aggregation. Fish oil has also been shown to benefit some arthritis patients and be useful for long-term brain and nervous system function. The anti-inflammatory effect of EPA in fish oil is helpful in the treatment of inflammatory conditions such as asthma, skin disorders, or autoimmune conditions. DHA and EPA in fish oil is particularly useful in preventing and treating dementia as well as psychiatric diseases such as depression or anxiety. These capsules contain more active ingredients (EPA and DHA) than typical fish oil capsules, so less capsules are required.

Consult your doctor before use.
Keep out of reach of children.
Dosage: Take 1 to 3 capsules daily or as directed by your doctor.

Supplement Facts
Liquid D3
Liquid D3™ comprises lanolin-derived cholecalciferol provided in a convenient concentrated liquid base of sunflower oil and purified water. Vitamin D deficiency is very prevalent and is implicated in what appears to be a wide array of conditions and diseases such as cancer, heart disease, autoimmune conditions, depression, birth defects, and diabetes, just to name a few. Vitamin D3 has a longer duration of action than vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Supplementation with vitamin D3 such as Liquid D3™ may be needed even though you might be already taking OsteoSun or another vitamin D supplement if a blood test indicates you are a person who requires even more Vitamin D. A blood level of vitamin D (25-hydroxy) is needed to determine what amount of vitamin D is needed for each individual.

Consult your doctor before using Liquid D3™ and to have your vitamin D level measured. Keep out of reach of children.
Dosing: Use as directed by your doctor. 1 drop (not dropperfull) contains 1,000 IU of vitamin D3, so follow instructions and take care to avoid overdosing which can lead to toxic levels of vitamin D.

Supplement Facts
NAC
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a derivative of the dietary amino acid L-cysteine, which serves as a precursor for the synthesis of glutathione. Glutathione plays a critical role in protecting the liver from toxins and protecting cells from oxidative damage. Low levels of glutathione have been found to be associated with many diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, and low glutathione levels have been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of diseases that are associated with oxidative stress. NAC is also known for its mucolytic properties and its ability to chelate heavy metals. NAC™ may be part of a treatment plan for neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, lung diseases such as COPD, psychiatric diseases such as depression, liver disease, chronic infections, or any other disease associated with a compromised antioxidant defense where a higher glutathione level is desired.

Consult your doctor before using NAC™, especially if you have a medical condition, are taking other medications, or are pregnant or lactating.
Avoid if you have a history of or current peptic or duodenal ulcer or if you have an organ transplant.
Dosing: Take 1 capsule twice daily or as directed by your doctor.

Borage CP-240
Borage CP-240™ softgels contain pure cold-pressed borage seed oil extracted from Borago Officinalis, a blue flowering plant. Borage CP-240™ provides the highest percentage (24%) of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) of any plant source. Metabolites of GLA are important in nerve membrane structure, nerve blood flow, and nerve conduction. GLA has an anti-inflammatory effect and has been shown to be useful for some people with skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema and asthma, and may be helpful in other inflammatory conditions.

Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating, or if you are taking blood-thinning medications or supplements.
Dosage: Take 1 to 2 softgels per day with meals.

Supplement Facts
Red Yeast Rice
Red yeast rice is developed by fermenting Monascus purpureus (red yeast) on commercially grown rice. The resulting fermented product contains at least nine naturally occurring compounds called monacolins. Monacolins act very similarly to the active ingredient in drugs called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) which are used for lowering cholesterol. Red Yeast Rice™ may be used as part of a treatment plan for lowering cholesterol, but only after other treatment options are attempted including living a healthy lifestyle. Because red yeast rice acts similarly to statin drugs, it could carry some of the risks that statin drugs do such as muscle problems or liver problems. Red yeast rice has been reported to have much less pronounced side effects if any in those that take it, so it likely is considerably safer than long-term use with statins.

Consult your doctor before using Red Yeast Rice™ to discuss if it is appropriate for your specific treatment plan, especially if you are currently taking medications.
Do not use Red Yeast Rice™ if you are allergic to yeast or rice, if you are pregnant or lactating, if you have liver disease, or if you are under 18 years of age. Dosing: As directed by your doctor.

Supplement Facts
5 HTP CR
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a precursor to serotonin and supplementing with 5-HTP raises levels of serotonin in the blood. Serotonin plays a major role in regulating mood and behavior. Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of 5-HTP supplementation to reduce anxiety, depression, insomnia, headaches (including migraines), and pain in those with fibromyalgia. 5-HTP-CR™ is sourced from the seed of the Griffonia simplicifolia, an African shrub and is rigorously tested for purity. As this supplement raises serotonin, it has a similar effect as the commonly prescribed drugs, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) such as Prozac or Zoloft.

Do not use in combination with SSRIs unless under supervision by a physician. Be sure to consult your doctor to discuss other drugs that might interact with 5-HTP such as other drugs for depression, anxiety, migraines, Parkinson’s Disease, or psychiatric disorders. Do not take 5-HTP in combination with other supplements containing L-tryptophan, 5-HTP, St. John’s Wort, SAMe, or Hawaiian woodrose.
Do not use if you are pregnant, lactating, or under the age of 18. Only use this supplement under the supervision of a doctor.
Dosing: Take 1 tablet up to 2 times a day with a meal.

$54.95
Supplement Facts
CoQmax CF
CoQmax CF™ is an all-natural, lipid-stabilized CoQ10 that is highly absorbable. Coenzyme Q10 is a natural vitamin-like substance that is produced by our bodies. Coenzyme Q10 is a key in the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the body’s major form of stored energy. Studies have shown a correlation with taking drugs called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), which are used for lowering cholesterol, and lower levels of circulating CoQ10 in those that take this type of drug. Even though taking CoQ10 will raise blood levels in those that are on statin drugs, it is still unclear whether taking CoQ10 in supplemental form will raise the level of CoQ10 in tissues such as muscle where it is needed the most. Supplementation has also not been shown to be effective at relieving the side effects of taking statin drugs such as myopathy (muscle aches). Until new research more explicitly describes the role of CoQ10, and because of its safety profile, we recommend it for those taking statin type drugs including red yeast rice for the conservative treatment of low levels of CoQ10 associated with these drugs. CoQ10 may also be part of a treatment plan for Parkinson’s Disease.

Consult your doctor before taking CoQmax CF™.
Dosing: Take 1 or 2 softgels daily.

Dr. Fuhrman's DHA Purity
100% Vegan DHA (long chain Omega–3)
This veggie derived DHA, sourced from microalgae, provides the beneficial omega–3 fatty acid of fish oil without the fish. DHA Purity now comes in an all–new, purified liquid form of very highly concentrated DHA so that it can be digested easier and hidden easily in food. The children’s dose is just one drop (measurable with a built–in graduated dropper) and easily disguised in their food, soup, drink or oatmeal. Just a few drops delivers a daily dose of essential omega–3 fatty acids (DHA).

Storage and Shipping
Dr. Fuhrman has tested other DHA products on the market and found them all to be shockingly high in rancidity scores. Rancid oils can cause burping, indigestion and a foul taste. Consuming rotten oil is not healthful! DHA Purity is kept refrigerated at all times, so that the oil does not become rancid or oxidized.

Osteo–Sun

Osteo-Sun

Printable Fact Sheet
Dr. Fuhrman's Osteo–Sun
Available in 2 Formulations
Vitamin D and Calcium Blend for Strong Bones
Recent medical studies document that vitamin D is more effective than calcium for protecting and building bone. In addition, vitamin D powerfully protects against cancer. Too much calcium can actually interfere with the conversion of vitamin D into its biologically active form. High dose calcium is not ideal for bone strength and may increase cancer risk as a result of lower vitamin D function. The modern world has an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency and most often a multi–vitamin containing the RDA for D is simply not sufficient to bring blood levels up to the ideal range, especially as we age.

Dr. Fuhrman's Osteo–Sun gives you the extra vitamin D you need and just the right levels of calcium and magnesium to maximize bone health.

Osteo-Sun contains vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), the most potent and efficient form of vitamin D.

Osteo-Sun vegan formulation utilizes vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), a form of the vitamin which is obtained only from plant sources. Higher levels of vitamin D2 are used in this product to adjust for its lower vitamin activity.

Dr. Fuhrman’s
Favorite Therapeutic Light
Humankind evolved under the outdoor day–night cycle, and it is essential to maintaining normal, healthy physiology. The importance of light – beyond vision– has been known in all cultures for all time. The scientific research effort, however, is recent. It was inspired by findings that light exposure directly affects hormone levels and can reset the body clock either forward or backward. Expert professional consensus recommends using diffuse white light that blocks out ultraviolet radiation (in contrast to the “sun lamps” used for tanning, which are dangerous both to skin and eyes).

Scientists think that light therapy works at several different levels, producing a combined beneficial effect. It is directly energizing for most people, thus combating mood–associated fatigue. When used at an appropriate morning hour (or in rare cases, evening hour), it corrects the misalignment of the internal body clock with external night and day. Finally, it stimulates the brain’s production of neurochemicals that are thought to be antidepressant (and in that sense, it mimics drug effects in a more natural way, without the need for drugs).

*Sale ends 1/31/11

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This therapeutic light unit delivers all of the benefits of light therapy with a sleek design.
Bright Light Therapy Standards:
Design based on university clinical trials
10,000 LUX outdoor level at a comfortable distance
Compact, discreet design
Emits balanced white light for eye safety
Broad field of illumination for easy use
99.3% UV filtered protection
Glare-free diffuser for visual comfort
Adjustable height for optimal positioning
Projects light from above for best effort
Solid, platform base that does not allow the light to be easily tipped over

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other Uses:
For light therapy sessions
By adjusting the angle of the lamp, your Day–Light makes a versatile task lamp
For pleasant ambient lighting
You may prefer the two–light setting for less intensity in small spaces.
Although researchers don’t have firm numbers, lots of people are light deprived. Symptoms of light deprivation include:
Feeling depressed or moody during the fall and winter.
Fatigue, lack of energy, and difficulty getting up in the morning.
Problems getting things done (lack of motivation).
Reduced social contact (often reduced sexual interest).
Cravings for carbohydrate and weight gain.
Treatment regimens should be individualized and always with doctor’s supervision in cases of full–blown clinical depression. Light therapy involves daily, scheduled exposure to intense levels of artificial light in order to regulate seasonal mood swings, improve sleeping patterns, and produce a general sense of well–being.
According to medical researchers, the fluorescent light box is the preferred device for light therapy, with a recommended starting dose of 10,000 lux for 30 minutes per day. (Lux is the unit of measuring the illumination intensity of light.) The required parameters for 10,000 lux light therapy have been thoroughly clinically tested at major university centers, and have been established as the international standard for treatment of winter depression, milder “winter doldrums,” and other chronobiological, circadian rhythm sleep and mood disturbances.

The general regimen consists of 30–minute early–morning exposure sessions, during which the user sits at a distance of 12 inches (30.5 cm) from the screen, and concentrates on the tabletop work surface – for reading, writing, laptop, breakfast, and so on. Many people find it convenient to get their light therapy session during breakfast, before leaving the house. However, the optimum timing and duration of the light therapy session for individuals differs between people, and therefore you will need to explore a bit to find what works best for you.

The light level can also be switched down when the user wants longer exposures during the day. The flexible angular tilt allows the fixture to be used as an exceptionally powerful task or reading lamp, or for pleasant ambient lighting at a distance. One of the unique features is the screen–height adjuster, allowing optimum positioning according to the user’s height relative to the height of the table and chair. The unit features a smoothly diffused polycarbonate screen that maximally filters out ultraviolet (UV) radiation – an important safety precaution. Spectral emission properties have been independently verified by laboratory calibrations at Columbia University.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When used correctly, the Therapeutic light is an efficient way to help alleviate the fatigue, blues and other symptoms you may experience during the shorter days of the year. You should use the three-light setting 10,000 lux intensity. (The one–light setting delivers 5,000 lux.) Begin with 30 minutes at 10,000 lux in the early morning.

Remember: as long as you use a light therapy device designed according to the specifications recommended by light therapy experts, there is little risk of adverse side effects, and you can safely modify and monitor your progress.

The Center for Environmental Therapeutics (CET) has set standards for light box design that consumers, doctors and insurance companies should keep in mind. This light was designed with these standards in mind.

CET Standards for Light Box Design
Only light boxes should be used for bright light therapy. Visors have not yet been shown effective in placebo-controlled studies.
The light box should provide 10,000 lux of illumination at a comfortable sitting distance (with the eyes 12 inches or more from the center of the screen).
The lamps should give off white light rather than colored light. (Extended exposure to blue light may be harmful to the eyes, and red light is not effective for light therapy.)
Fluorescent lamps should have a filter that blocks ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV rays are harmful to the eyes and skin.
The light source should be covered with a smooth diffusing screen that evens the delivery of light. Bare bulbs and sharp points of light (including LED displays) can produce intolerable glare, forcing your gaze out of the therapeutic field.
Color temperature of lamps should be in the 3000–5000 Kelvin range for comfortable usage.
Light boxes should be equipped with high-efficiency ballasts that operate at 20,000 cycles per second in order to avoid flicker that can cause headaches. (Inferior magnetic ballasts operate at only 60 cycles per second.)
The light should be projected downward toward the eyes at an angle to minimize aversive visual glare.
The screen area should be at least 190 square inches (for example 12 inches high by 16 inches long) to provide a satisfactory field of illumination. (When using a compact light box, even small head movements will take the eyes out of the therapeutic range of light.)

JANUARY 6, 2011

Going vegan is a big step—congrats! And although it's the best thing that you can do for animals, the planet, and your body, the transition to a vegan lifestyle can seem overwhelming. Maybe your friends don't quite get it (yet) or you're still struggling with what to eat (click here).
Need a good reason to stick with it? Here's one:

Because cows like number 879 can't fight back.
Cow number 879 lived—and died—in the dairy industry. During a PETA undercover investigation, she was found dead in inches of muck, urine, and fecal matter, and her body was covered with waste. She is believed to have been shot and killed.
Despite the overwhelmingly sad video footage of the dairy factory farm where cow number 879 died and photographic evidence of lame, thin, and downed cows left to suffer and die at the facility—not to mention expert testimony that all this constituted cruelty—a judge whose courtroom was packed with dairy farmers dismissed all charges against the factory farm's owners.

Because cows cannot rely on the law to protect them, it's up to every concerned person to take a stand and to vote against cruelty with your shopping cart. By going vegan, you're standing up and saying that this is not OK. You're also helping to prevent this from happening to any other animals.

(V.Messina, "considerations in planning vegan diets : Children" ; Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 101 (6), 2001, p.661-669)

[Source : D. Truesdell, P. Acosta, « Feeding the Vegan Infant and Child », Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 85 (7), 1985.

· Choisir une variété d’aliments
comprenant des céréales complètes, des
légumes, des légumineuses, des fruits à
coque (noix, noisettes, amandes,
cacahuètes, etc.), des graines et, si
souhaité, des produits laitiers et des
oeufs.

constituent d’excellentes sources d’acide alpha-linolénique]

Conclusion
edslacriee@free.fr, www.lacriee.free.fr.
