Abused, Tormented and Killed for Entertainment

It's no coincidence that the word "matador" is Spanish for "killer". This killer and his associates – from the bullfight promoter to the tourist who buys a ticket to a bullfight on a whim – will be responsible for the gruesome public deaths of tens of thousands of animals in bullfighting arenas across Spain, France, Mexico and South America this year.
Bullfighting is a violent blood sport, and PETA is determined to see it stopped for good. Will you stand up for bulls and all animals by making a special gift online today?

There is no such thing as a fair bullfight, and fight organisers know it. From almost the moment a bull enters the arena, picadores on blindfolded horses twist lances into his back and neck. The wounds cause such excruciating pain and blood loss that even lifting his head is often difficult for the bull. The banderilleros follow soon after, running the bull in circles and plunging sticks with harpoon points into his back until he is dizzy, weak and unable to run.
It's at this point that the matador provokes the exhausted bull into lunging at him in order to drive a sword into the terrified animal's heart. Sometimes the killer punctures the bull's lungs instead of the heart, leaving the bull drown in his own blood. If the matador lives up to his name and kills the animal, the bull's ears and tail will be cut off as grisly trophies. If he fails, an executioner is called in to stab the mutilated animal to death with a dagger.

It's not uncommon for tourists and spectators to swear off going to bullfights after seeing cruelty like I've described here. While ticket sales may be dwindling, every ticket purchased still supports the killing of not only the animal in the ring that day but also the others who will die just as gruesomely after him.
By making a generous donation to PETA right now, you'll strengthen our growing efforts to bring an end to bullfighting and other abuses of animals.
Pressure from PETA and compassionate people like you is mounting, and judging from recent news, this blood sport's days may well be numbered. As of this past January, bullfighting has been banned in the entire region of Catalonia, Spain. Irish betting company Paddy Power no longer accepts bets on bullfights on its Spanish website after hearing from PETA, and Ryanair has removed all references to the cruel "sport" from its websites.
With the height of summer travel season upon us, there is no better time to remind tourists, travel companies and governments that tormenting and massacring bulls by the thousands must stop.
We're putting pressure on the Spanish government as well as the tourist industry and companies that promote bullfights. We're working with animal rights groups in bullfighting countries, and our large-scale, attention-grabbing demonstrations keep the issue alive in the media and the public mind. With your help today we can do even more to prevent bulls and other animals from suffering. Please make a generous donation today.
Tens of thousands of bulls are facing a violent death unless compassionate people act now. Please help us fight against the abuse of animals by donating online right now.

Saving Bulls Today

For the tens of thousands of bulls who will be killed in the name of "entertainment" this year, a bullfight is anything but fair. There is very little competition between a dagger- and sword-wielding matador and a confused, maimed and debilitated animal.
PETA is determined to save bulls from being goaded, tormented and killed in this blood sport, and we need your help. Please give a generous gift today and strengthen PETA's groundbreaking efforts for bulls and all animals.

Few who have seen a bullfight firsthand could call this bloody and violent spectacle "entertainment". At arenas in Spain, France, Mexico and parts of South America, bulls have shown signs of exhaustion and dehydration even before being pushed into the ring. But the worst of their ordeal occurs in front of the leering crowds as the animals are stabbed, goaded and cut, causing them to bleed profusely. This painful abuse ends in death, after which the bulls' broken bodies are mutilated and cut up for trophies for the matador who ultimately killed them.
While some attempt to market bullfighting as a "tradition", the majority of Spain's citizens have shown no interest in attending bullfights when surveyed. Even though local residents may be showing less interest in the fights than ever, it's often the ticket income from tourists that is helping to keep this failing blood sport financially viable.
That's part of why PETA is helping bulls by working to stop those ticket sales and close down the bullrings for good. We've been putting pressure on the Spanish government, the tourist industry and companies that promote bullfights. We're cooperating with animal rights groups in Spain and elsewhere, and our large-scale, attention-grabbing demonstrations are keeping this important issue alive in the media and the public mind.
You can help keep this effort and all of PETA's work for animals going strong by giving online today.

Through high-profile publicity and tireless campaigning by PETA and compassionate people around the world, the fight against bullfighting is changing hearts and minds. But despite the encouraging developments, tens of thousands of bulls are still dying in agony each year for the sake of "entertainment", and we urgently need your help. By making a gift today, you'll help support PETA's life-saving efforts, including:
Working with partners in Spain to create an international media firestorm during this July's Running of the Bulls, a cruel race in which terrified bulls are goaded to run through the cobbled streets on their way to the bullring (every bull in the race will die in the bullfights)
Pressuring more travel editors and magazines to end their annual stories that glorify and promote the Running of the Bulls and bullfights
Joining with international activists at the 6th Intercontinental Summit Against Bullfighting this summer to develop international plans to end tourist interest in bullfighting, pressure sponsors to end financial support and otherwise increase pressure to end bullfights
None of this important work would be possible without the generosity of PETA donors like you. Please help us save bulls and countless other animals by making the most generous donation you can afford today.
Kind regards,

Ingrid E Newkirk
Founder

PS We're making great strides in the fight to stop bullfighting, and the more support PETA has, the louder our voice for bulls can become. Won't you take a moment to make a secure gift online right now?

I am a UK taxpayer. Please treat this donation, all future donations and all donations I have made to PETA Foundation in the last four years as Gift Aid donations until further notice.

I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand the charity will reclaim 28p of tax on every £1 that I gave up to 5 April 2008 and will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give on or after 6 April 2008.
