http://www.change.org/petitions/view/quick_kill_hunting_act_prohibiting_the_use_of_body_gripping_traps

Human beings have been hunting animals for millions of years; we came a long way from Prehistoric times into the computer era and being a civilized nation humane aspects cannot be ignored necessitating a quick, clean kill and avoidance of suffering even for wild animals.

Body gripping traps are cruel and inhumane. Imagine a truck door slamming on your arm or leg and it can't open. WIth the use of body gripping traps, this is exactly what is felt. The animal will not be killed until the hunter checks back which can be days-animals have been known to chew off their extremity. In a civilized society, ask yourself is this right?

http://animalrights.about.com/od/fur/a/FurTrapping.htm

Approximately 10 million animals are trapped and killed worldwide each year. Animals caught in traps suffer immensely while waiting for the trapper to come and kill them.

Another problem with any kind of trap is the lack of discrimination. For every intended victim of the traps, there are 2 to 10 unintended victims: birds, cats, dogs and other animals are caught, maimed and killed in traps. Even animals listed under the Endangered Species Act are caught and killed. In the industry, these unintended victims are referred to as “trash” animals. There have also been cases where children were caught in these traps.

Humane Interventions:

ban the use of snares on land (can you imagine how it would feel to die being hung upside down-the pain is most excruciating & slow-that's what these animals go through).
Banning the use of ALL body-gripping traps especially with serrated teeth;
All traps to be inspected at least within 24 hours daily.
There are humane traps on the market which do not grip and can be used instead.

Barbaric and in-humane traps are still widely used and legal in Canada.

The traps not only slowly kills the animals being hunted for their Meat and Fur, but also effect "Non Target" catches such as Cats and Dogs.

Leg- hold traps are the issue I decided to start this petition after I saw a dog rescued in Alberta that has a leg hold trap on its front paw.

Thankfully there are rescue organizations that are there to help dogs in this situation, but we need to do more, to make sure these situations become ones of the past.
Please sign this petition; we need to speak for those who have no voice.

Petition Letter
Greetings,

I just signed the petition to Stop the use of Leg-Hold, Snare and Conibear traps in Canada

Stop the use of Leg-Hold, Snare and Conibear traps in Canada

These traps slowly kill the animal being hunted for their Meat and Fur, but also effect "Non Target" catches such as Cats and Dogs.

These barbaric and in-humane traps are still widely used and legal in Canada. These traps are designed to hold the injured and terrified animal until the trapper comes to kill it. The suffering of these trapped animals not only include the wounds from the trap itself but exposure to the elements without food, water and exposes them as a easy target for wild animals.

The leg- hold trap is why I started this petition after I saw a dog rescued in Alberta recently that has a leg hold trap on its front paw. The dogs picture featured in this petition acts as the inspiration for change.

The Leg -hold traps are banned in 63 countries, Canada is not one of them. Taxpayer’s dollars in Canada have gone towards developing "Humane Traps" which are laughable alterations to the leg-hold trap itself. Widening spaces between the teeth and adding a thin layer of nylon as "padding" on the teeth. These alterations are cosmetic and dont change the fact that a spring powered large steel- toothed jaw attaches itself to paws, legs and heads of the curious or unknowing dogs.

Thankfully there are rescue organizations that are there to help dogs in this situation, but we need to do more to make sure these situations become ones of the past. In Canada we have rescue organizations, various humane societies and sanctuaries for dogs. These organizations strive to protect, rescue and teach people about humane treatment of animals. So why is this archaic trapping method accepted in Canada? It halts the progress of Canada being a leader in ethical treatment practices.
Its time this issue is really seen for what it is- disturbing. All that is needed is large public movement that will ultimately lead to a legislation change in Canada.

We need to provide a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves.

Sincerely,

Fur trappers will tell you that it is in their interest to catch only the species they are after, and that they have the skills to set traps that will only catch those species. The sad reality is that most traps are notoriously indiscriminate. Nooses designed to catch squirrels running along limbs may ensnare woodpeckers taking the same route, or a curious jay. Leghold traps or footsnares set for foxes may snap on the foot of a deer or a dog or anything else that steps on the trap. Baits meant for wolves are known to attract eagles, rare species such as wolverines, or other non-target animals. A companion dog out walking with her owner or a cat near a stream may suddenly be crushed by a Conibear trap set for muskrats. Even people, particularly curious children, can be caught or hurt by these traps.
Leg hold traps are cruel and inhumane. Animals that get caught in leg hold taps can suffer for days. Animals have been known to chew their leg off to try to get free from the trap. Oftentimes the victims suffer severe physical injury, psychological trauma, thirst, hypothermia, and predation.

Trappers have designed a class of "quick-kill" traps that supposedly kill instantly by slamming shut on an animal's body, crushing vital organs. Like all traps, they don't always work as planned, often with horrific results. The animal may enter a "quick-kill" trap the wrong way, and is partly crushed, and dies slowly. Snow and ice conditions can prevent proper closure. Aquatic mammals, like beavers, reflexively close off their air passages when submerged, and slowly suffocate while frantically trying to reach the surface, dying in terror without actually drowning.

In 2011, Congress delisted wolves from the endangered species list in five states, including Idaho. Shortly thereafter, hunters proudly posted graphic online images of their wolf trapping achievements, including a wolf's paw pinched in a metal trap and a hurt wolf suffering in bloody snow.

Despite the public outcry over trapping practices, Idaho has proposed an amendment that would add the right to trap animals to the state's constitution. The measure will be on state ballots by November 2012.

If passed, the amendment would permanently give Idaho hunters the right to torture animals to death through the use of painful traps, including foot hold traps. Please sign the petition to urge the Idaho State Legislature to remove trapping from the proposed amendment

Sponsored by: Animal Advocates
A steel jaw trap set for a bobcat accidentally trapped a female mountian lion in Nebraska. The injuries were so severe, the lion had to be euthanized. The mountian lion was eliminated from the state in 1890 and there is only a small breeding popuation of mountian lions in Nebraska, less than 20. To have lost one to this cruel device is a major set-back for the species.

When an animal steps on the steel-jaw trap spring, the trap's jaws slam shut, clamping down on the animal's limb or paw. As the animal struggles in excruciating pain to get free, the steel vise cuts into his or her flesh-often down to the bone-mutilating the leg or paw. Some animals, especially mothers desperate to return to their young, will even attempt to chew or twist off their trapped limbs. Not only are traps cruel, they are also completely indiscriminate. Every year, dogs, cats, birds, and other animals-including endangered species-are "accidentally" crippled or killed by steel jaw traps.

We ask Nebraska to ban the use of steel jaw traps.

We, the undersigned, seek to prohibit the recreational and commercial use of hidden steel-jaw leg-hold traps, wire snares and other body-gripping animal traps on New Mexico's public lands.

These traps do not reliably differentiate between the intended target and many other non-target animals which may be cruelly maimed or killed. People and pets are also at risk. Unlimited, profit driven trapping can harm and deplete wildlife communities. The use of traps is NOT consistent with the "fair chase" principles of ethical hunting.

Petition Letter
Greetings,

I just signed the following petition addressed to: US Fish and Wildlife.

----------------
Stop the use of coyote bait/traps

This is being done carelessly and cruelly when there are alternate methods of population control. Traps are being placed close to water sources, livestock, and homes and are posing danger to pets, children and other wildlife.
The coyote population was manageable until measures to eradicate wolf populations were taken. By removing the coyote's natural enemy, the problem was created, and now the "solution" is a deadly poison that has cost lives of pets and other wildlife. In many cases, the 1080 is found within less than 30 feet of homes with children, and even water sources. This is a painful death for all animals, including the coyote. If the goal is to protect livestock, that's what dogs, fences, and even donkeys are for!!!
Please stop the use of compound 1080 and other toxins and find alternate methods of dealing with coyotes!
----------------

Sincerely,
