Slaughter of Bears Supported by Your Tax Money

Somewhere in Canada, a mother bear is surprised to discover an unexpected nearby food source. Exhausted from weeks of providing her recently born cubs with attention and sustenance, she chooses to leave them briefly to further investigate her potential meal. A single gunshot from a waiting hunter dooms her to a violent death and could leave the cubs she cared for to die of exposure or starvation without their mother's protection.
Almost as disturbing as the way in which many bears like these are killed is the fact that their slaughter is being supported by the taxes of compassionate British citizens like you. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) continues to spend taxpayer money on fur obtained by killing Canadian bears in order to make ceremonial caps for The Queen's Guards.
Together, we must help these animals. Please make a generous gift right now to support our vital work for bears and other animals who desperately need PETA's help.

Whatever excuse the MoD can produce for not switching to luxurious faux fur for The Queen's Guards' caps, the deaths of these bears can never be justified. As long as the MoD uses real bear fur for The Queen's Guards' caps, bears in Canada will continue to be killed for their fur. PETA has led the way in sourcing and testing modern faux-fur fabrics that look and feel the same as the original but that don't require a single bear to be shot and killed – so The Queen's Guards can keep their tradition without any of the cruelty.
Will you stand against the senseless slaughter of black bears and other animals by making a donation today? Your gift will go to work immediately helping PETA stop the abuse and exploitation of animals for something as trivial as a cap!
Dozens of celebrities and political figures – from Ricky Gervais and Pamela Anderson to Ann Widdecombe and Bill Oddie – have voiced their support and taken part in PETA's eye-opening campaign for bears. I hope you'll join us in our efforts today as well.
Kind regards,

Ingrid E Newkirk

PS We must keep the pressure on the MoD if we're to end the slaughter of bears for The Queen's Guards' caps. Will you strengthen our efforts for animals by making a special gift online right now?

Killing Bears With Your Tax Money?

Every single fur cap worn by a member of The Queen's Guards is the product of the violent death of a Canadian black bear.

It can take the whole hide of one bear to make just one cap, yet despite this fact and the availability of so many beautiful faux-fur options, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) continues to spend taxpayer money on ceremonial headgear that it values more than an animal's life.

Please help us do more for these bears – and all animals – by making a secure gift online right now.

Many of the bears slaughtered to produce caps for The Queen's Guards are lured to their deaths by hunters who place food in areas called "bait stations". When the hungry bears smell the food and come to eat, the cowardly hunters shoot at them from their hiding places. Many bears are not killed instantly when they're shot – some bears escape the hunters only to die a lingering death from blood loss or starvation.

Footage from the Canadian hunt has revealed that mother bears are shot in front of their petrified young. Wildlife biologists estimate that 70 per cent of these newly orphaned cubs will die within 12 months without their mothers to protect and care for them.
This hunt – partially supported by funds from UK taxpayers like you – is cruel and needs to end. When you consider that the MoD could easily help stop this slaughter by simply adopting faux fur for The Queen's Guards' caps, you can see how urgent it is to win this campaign right away.

The pressure on the MoD is certainly growing. Last month, hundreds of PETA supporters –including the beloved Bill Oddie – marched across London to demand that the MoD "spare the bears". The protest was seen by thousands and brought this important issue to many who were unaware their tax monies were helping to support such a frivolous and cruel item. This is a campaign we can win, but without the support of compassionate people like you, the killing might continue. Won't you help us do more for bears and all other animals by donating right now?
Thank you for everything you do for bears and all other animals.
