TAKE ACTION: Give Florida Panthers More Room to Roam

Beautiful, elusive, powerful – and critically endangered.

The Florida panther is one of the most endangered mammals on earth and the future of this subspecies is in our hands.

Panthers need more room to roam – please tell the Secretary of Interior and the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make panthers a priority!

Florida panthers once prowled and flourished in America’s southeastern woodlands and swamps, but today, fewer than 160 of these majestic cats remain in a tiny portion of their historic range. And that habitat is shrinking every day – gobbled up by highway construction, subdivisions and commercial development.

In recent months, vehicle collisions between panthers and humans have taken a deadly turn. Vehicles are a leading cause of panther mortality – a total of 19 panthers were killed on Florida highways in 2012. That’s the highest recorded number of panthers killed by cars in a single year.

We’re in a race against time. As panther habitat becomes more and more fragmented, it will be increasingly difficult for these creatures to stay out of harm’s way.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must prioritize efforts to create and expand wildlife refuges by obtaining and allocating funding and working with landowners to protect habitat that secures the Florida panthers’ future in the wild.

Please take action today! Help protect and recover Florida panthers.

I am writing to urge you to take all necessary steps to conserve the critically endangered Florida panther. Specifically, we urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make securing habitat and travel corridors for the Florida panther one of its highest priorities. With an estimated 100-160 remaining, the Florida panther is one of the most endangered mammals in the U.S. and we have a limited window of time to protect and restore undeveloped tracts of land and provide habitat linkages before they are lost.Plans are in the works to build new subdivisions and industrial complexes and several new highways in the rural regions of the state. These highways would run through panther habitat and public conservation lands and lead to even more development and fragmentation. Highway deaths are already the number one human cause of mortality for these endangered animals. Increasing fragmentation of panther's habitat would lead to even more deaths on roads. Last year, a record 19 panthers were struck and killed by motorists, more than in any other year. Scientists believe that loss of panthers on roads is preventing the cats from expanding their breeding range northward. The FWS can make sure that enough contiguous habitat remains for these majestic cats to survive and return northward into their historic range. We urge you to make that a top priority in the coming year

Help put Panthers on the Scoreboard

Thank you again for taking action to help save the imperiled Florida panther. By taking action you’ve demonstrated that you care about the dire situation of this critically endangered animal. Next month, we are launching a major public awareness campaign to alert Floridians to the plight of their official State Animal – and to engage as many people as possible in our efforts to save it. Today fewer than 160 of these beautiful cats remain in a shrinking patchwork of South Florida habitat. As human habitation expands into panther territory, collisions with cars and trucks have become a leading cause of panther deaths. We need to Give Panthers a BRAKE – literally. Our kick-off will take place at the home of Florida’s aptly-named pro hockey team – the Florida Panthers! We plan to run a high-profile advertising blitz at all eight Panther home games in March. Average attendance this season has been about 18,000 people per game. That means your donation will give us 144,000 chances to get the word out that the real panthers – the four-legged ones – need a BRAKE.

But we must raise $50,000 by February 28th to reserve our space, so please hurry!

No one at the hockey games will miss the message. Our call to action will flash on the jumbotron-sized scoreboard at the center of the stadium; It will be displayed four to six times per game on the huge LED-powered ring of light that circles the stadium;
It will run on the giant 20-foot by 20-foot video screen at the main entrance; And, radio announcers covering the games will call on all Floridians to give panthers a BRAKE! This advertising blitz is a big step in our ambitious campaign to bring the Florida panther back from the brink:

Inspire Floridians to protect their panther through advertising and outreach campaigns like “Give Panthers a Brake!”Improve safe passage for panthers across roads; Secure more panther habitat, allowing them to expand their natural range and thrive; Work with Florida landowners to encourage responsible coexistence with panthers. 19 Florida panthers were hit and killed by cars in 2012 – sadly, this was a new record for the number of Florida panthers killed by vehicles in a single year. With your help, we can make sure Florida’s majestic panther is on the road to recovery. Please donate today and help us get panthers on the scoreboard!

Help Give Panthers a BRAKE!

A lot of Americans don't know that the Florida panther is one of the most endangered mammals on earth – in fact there are fewer than 160 left in the wild! Rapid development is devouring panther habitat and frequent car collisions are taking precious panther lives.

Help us raise awareness about the plight of the Florida panther, and educate Floridians on how they can help save their wild treasure.

Please donate today to help us raise $50,000 by February 28 to run our “Give Florida Panthers a Brake” ads throughout the stadium of the NHL’s Florida Panthers.

Keep Endangered Panthers From Becoming Roadkill

Fewer than 160 Florida panthers remain in the wild, and 19 were hit and killed by vehicles in 2012 – this was a new record for the number of Florida panthers killed by vehicles in a single year.

The Florida panther is one of the most endangered mammals on Earth and we need your help to save it!

In just over a week, we are launching a major public awareness campaign to alert Floridians to the plight of their official state animal – and to engage as many people as possible in our efforts to save it.

We plan to run a high-profile advertising blitz at all eight Panther home games in March. Average attendance this season has been about 18,000 people per game.

These ads will reach out directly to residents and drivers in Florida and remind them that the simple act of slowing down can help save their endangered state animal.

But we must raise $50,000 by February 28th to get this campaign underway, so please hurry!
